while yacht refers to >dystopia (the earth is on fire)< as a post-apocalyptic fight song and a cautionary tale, the tracks chant-along melodies and unsparing synths nudge listeners far closer to dance than despair. from the sound of things, that reaction will likely also be elicited by two new remixes of the portland duos song, from their 2011 long player shangri-la. legendary production duo justin strauss and bryan mette, aka whatever/whatever, completely rework the sound of >dystopia< on their version, reorienting it with heavy doses of funk. while the original rides atop buzzing synths, the whatever/whatever remix adds a thick bassline and shimmery keyboards that leap out like solar flares. on the flipside, uk-based emperor machine starts their dystopia remix with a dubby feel – every vocal echoing endlessly – and then u-turns into wholly a updated, yet classic, disco sound. the rhythms are sultry, slinking behind a deep, repeated, synthline, its a recipe for an unexpectedly smooth, subtly hypnotic, and utterly danceworthy song.

hdr002 takes us straight to 90s house territory with four new edits from nycs marcos cabral. the a-side opens with >sym phon<, an anthemic filtered piano house jam that opens up wide and swallows all in its path. a2 gives us >better think again< with sticatto chords and twinkling keys in a jersey-esque house sound. the b-side hits with >in the sea<, starting off with a giant slow tribal beat and then morphs into a psychedelically swirling synth workout. b2 wraps things up with >get get get< turning our ears to old school chicago house. rolands tr-707 lays the percussion down while the chant of >get in the groove< repeats into infinity

we are back with a special release from einmusik. this time samuel kindermann is telling you something about those real summer-nights, those few mysterious and magic hours filled with sounds, colorful lights and beauty all around. -nyx- is one of the songs on the -oceans bottom pt.2- ep. it comes up with an endless dreamy hook, the slappy rhythm is gracious and the groove is full and checkless. bit by bit the headstrong sounds direct you deeper into this track and you re hands will be up at least. backside we find -oneiros- it s a very coltish track with a haunting melody. it s humming in your ears, that s what it is made for. such an easiness coming up while hearing this song, you ll get a bit gushy and your feet won t be able to stop. both songs on are preparing the way into a unique sound-universe which will be opened on einmusiks new album coming up in autumn.

carefully caressing your back whilst whispering sweet nothings into your ear, pillowtalk join the life and death family with their modern dance soul hybrid, >the come back ep<. despite the name, its actually a debut ep -- and one that quickly establishes pillowtalks unique sound as an important voice in the new generation of contemporary dance music. already getting serious play (and props) from a wide range of djs, from the deep & soulful wolf + lamb and soul clap crews all the way to the banging bass centric justin martin, >the come back< finds life and death once again crossing the conventional genre descriptions with a true dancefloor bomb that everyone can get behind. imagine motown and classic doo-wop blended with a modern dance sensibility and you may start to get an idea of the pillowtalk sound. but its better to stop imagining and just have a listen because what these guys are doing is so genuinely unique, its not an easy one to pigeonhole with words and genre titles alone. the ep includes >the come back<, >soft< and >long lost friends< as well as a life and death remix of >soft<. put together in the life and death laboratories it brings a darker, deeper take on this beautiful and already incredibly sentimental dancefloor serenade.

in 2010 the la based label halo cyan records re-released vladislav delay s sistol project. for this deluxe 2cd reissue various well known electronic musicians remixed the recordings from 1999. the whole project received enthusiastic reviews in pitchfork, resident advisor, etc. one of the remixers is mike huckaby, who transferred sistols track >keno< into an outstanding dubby detroit-house masterpiece. it was immediately clear that this track had to be released on vinyl. we are delighted to announce the collaboration between halo cyan and slics of life for mike huckabys s y n t h remix of keno. on the b-side, mike huckaby remixed a track originally produced in the same time period: poles >silberfisch< was released in 2000 on the highly acclaimed yellow album >3<, re-released by scape in 2008 as part of the 3-cd pole box. in 2011, mike huckaby keeps the dubby and slightly melancholic crackling atmosphere of the original, but his s y n t h remix is beams >silberfisch< straight onto the dancefloor, where it arrives as a driving deep techno track.

today, the pit lane is decorated with red carpet and golden leaf for two exceptional talents: from the black forest patrick chardronnet for the gui boratto (bra)-team, and from the westerwald dominik eulberg (ger) for the extrawelt-team. both drivers are concentrated. they are wearing shimmering overalls and golden helmets. they get into their softly purring apparillos. two pairs of gloves at the steering wheel. the heat is flimmering over the hot asphalt. during the race, the gui boratto / patrick chardronnet-team focuses on deep bass lines and a constant improvement in performance with a slightly shifted ideal line, and only one pit stop. in three words: mighty, majestic, thunderous! team-extrawelt acts a bit more flexible. dominik eulberg either puts on the handbrake or drives at full speed. he is fast, he is flexible, and his elegant turns make the audience go wild. but in the end, both sportsmen share the champagne, and the after-show party will go down in the history of the tunig series. ready, steady, go!

jax is a collective of like-minded artists, musicians, thinkers movers and booty-shakers, who believe there is more to records than just some grooves engraved into black plastic. their vision is to treat each release as a presentation in itself, complete with original and individual artwork, features and an exhibition. each production will feature artwork shown in a cube of about 8 cubic meters. every record-released will be strictly-limited to 500 copies, which includes a poster referencing the piece made by the artist! daniel roth was born in seeheim near frankfurt. he started to experiment with different styles of electronical music using an akai mpc and a juno 106 in 1997. by this time he wasnt thinking of making music his profession. he then started his studies in skulpturing at the städel in frankfurt. after having finished art school he took up producing music again, influenced by his art and contemporary dance music styles. with his jax release he showcases his ability to combine different elements with his unique touch.

dresdens cult label uncanny valley returns with the charming catalogue number six. following up jacob korns first artist ep for the label its c-beams turn now to continue the series of artist eps. break sls and sandrow ms project can be referred to as a true labels child. musically, both artists got to know each other only when the label was founded. for >strollin< they lend the vocal talents by tina slotta who is associated with uncanny valley as well. the result is an irresistible house-jam. easy vibrant beats are complemented by birds twittering, warm keys and tinas carefree lyrics. jackmates remix toughen things up and transfers the tracks with mighty detroit-chords into a real monster for the dancefloor. the slightly murkier >scrapyard< takes its strength out of the interaction between its vehement beats and the c-beams-typical sound excursions. finally, the instrumental of >strollin< rounds up the ep.

elektro willi and his son are back. two years on board of a club cruise ship - thats enough. dad, we go ashore! sure, it was only a small step from selling washing-machines via the more or less obscure music industry to club ship animation. but sometimes even the most spectacular evening dinners, the most exciting special guests become boring. you just want to pull of your sweaty vinyl-showsauna-suit and get back to your origins: e.g. selling washing-machines. but without melancholy: on the aida, the willi-show became improved, in mediterranean nights, a new album was drafted into the starry sky.

october and john osborn are proud to present the inaugural 12inch on their newly minted bristol and berlin based house & techno label: tanstaafl records. tanstaafl is an acronym for there aint no such thing as a free lunch. we kick things off with john osborns debut release, epoch 4 backed with a darker, reduced, dub-influenced version. john based in berlin worked with october in his bristol based studio to create and produce some wonderful, raw, dirty analogue house music. both tracks were meticulously produced by herr osborn and recorded and engineered by october. laurie appleblims joined the studio session and he dove straight into the juno 60 and played the melody that finnishes the track off. tough floor business for your feet and mind, tried and tested around the world. a great start for this promising label.

theo roars into a fierce, uglier-than-ugly edit, with no let-up for thirteen minutes, when it crashes to a standstill: a hurtling, mesmerizing ride, multi-layered and clustered with synth washes, bleeps and alarms, galloping drums, clattering percussion.burnts shangaan variation is perforce more chilled, lithe, reverberating. the drums are crafted and fatback, with moody vocal interjections and haunting keys, chocka with dub thrills and spills, lethally spiked with bass.

as music lovers we draw the greatest inspiration and pleasure when hearing compositions that tell a good story. bon voyage is one such example. rising from the ashes of the highly sought after les aeroplanes whose >impersonal naviguant ep< for mathematics was a sure-fire hit.
this vibrant parisian outfit has delved deep into a rich sonic landscape and evolved a musical score which is incomparable to most of todays computer generated music. bon voyage cross genres as musicians, they carve out the sweetest melodies and allow the nectar to flow with an assortment of italian strings, american filters and japanese oscillators.

good stuff is the first single taken from luomos plus album, appearing in september 2011 on moodmusic records. luomo aka vladislav delay, sistol, uusitalo… under a raft of names finnish artist sasu ripatti has in the last years experimented with ambient, broken beat, glitch as well as grooves and house music with soulful vocals, working with scissor sisters, black dice, apparat, craig armstrong, massive attack, robert owens and towa tei. luomo is about experimenting with pop music, a big influence for ripatti, and bringing it to a fusion of house, disco and electronica. plus is the 5th album for luomo, taking the songwriter abilities of ripatti to a new level, dwelling deep into first generation chicago house and the pop sensibilities of 80s london, coupled with his impeccable crossover pop appeal. never going for a one formula approach, plus has a distinct luomo sound - hypnotic, sexy and delicately insistent, rhythms following a self-movement and never standing still. good stuff brings luomos pop abilities to top-form, changing between a mid 80s boogie bass and synthetic yet warm deep house with a positive vocal deliver from the ever intriguing chicago boys. remixes comes courtesy of area & dave dk.

the proposition is a simple one. it was a 2009 when julio bashmore first remixed >heartbreaker< from deadboys classic first release - the >u cheated< ep on well rounded.
he remoulded the garage template of the original into something more immediate, replacing the swung off-beats of the original with driving forward-rhythms and a clarity of purpose that takes absolutely nothing away from the musical impact of the original. this circulated on mp3 and we smiled and danced.
unexpectedly, in 2010 jb returned to >heartbreaker< for a different interpretation. this time around a more haunting approach was the order of the day with cross-fading strings creating a soulful, otherworldly atmosphere. the drop this time also swapped sub bass for punchy 808s. a tantalising further alternative that pointed the way to this vinyl release.

having once said that daily life as well as adventurous trips across the globe were the source of her inspiration when making music, its obvious which recent event in the world of anja schneider formed the basis of her new ep on mobilee records. whilst she takes a well earned pause and enjoys a very new lease of life, >hello boy!< will hit the stores in october. for this release, she joined lee jones in the studio to make something with a twist. with a strong anja schneider flavour, title track >hello boy!< cleaverly transposes a real sense of excitement and waiting on to the dance floor, with soft mysterious chords and a steady build that works itself into a drop. >rio bravo< offers a relief with more of an airy head-spinning feel and >let me out< … well, its done now ,)

after a series of classically oriented 12 inches with deep debts owed to old school detroit and chicago vibes, remain & mlle caros release stands out as a thoroughly modern model of analog dancefloor ammunition. while >heat< and >rogue< dispense with homage and go for the jugular with darkside intensity, the remixes hand chosen by remain and caro open things up, revealing undiscovered dimensions to the music. holmar filipsson from thugfucker (life & death records) teams up with neurotic drum bands ulysses to transform >heat< into a mid-tempo disco chugger heavy on the drums and boogie bass. populette unleash a late night dancefloor bomb complete with hypnotic arpeggios for their corking refix of >rogue<.

on their last album franz and jakob aka format b were to be found covered in soot and coal, firing up the engines of the dance locomotive, now they have gone greener and swapped over to wind power and are fishing the >restless< oceans of the world. tirelessly the two sailors work on the deck disregarding the cold and the weather, pulling in the nets filled with floundering hits. this time they have spiced up the bait with the amazing voice of fran on >liquid< who turns into a working class siren and manages to rock the boat properly with track 2. keeping with the maritime theme the boys have used a harmonica on >socks and sandals< and a piano on >piano man<. classic format b can be found on >atomizer< and >oversexed< … kicking man high bass beats to thrill the four quarter beat fans, and >biker meth< is going to keep you dancing till noon (at least). even with the pressures of jet setting, label management, party organisation, building a studio, and the romantic needs of their girlfriends they have still managed to finish their first formatik album to their complete satisfaction and are extremely proud to present the first artist album on formatik records. ahoi and enjoy people!

recorded in the immediate aftermath of his last ep >passed me by<, this new doublepack from andy stott features six new productions that are more desolate and exposed than anything on its predecessor. the opening >submission< tumbles into being with layers of washed-out digital revolutions, creating an artificial landscape thats quite at odds with the analogue machinations that follow - yet somehow rendering the alienated feel of this material perfectly. >posers< nudges its way into being abruptly and embeds another squashed funk variant thas all low-lit neon and growling textures, awkwardly shuffling into a more robust 4/4 template suffused with sparkling percussion and disembodied vocals. >bad wires< is the centrepiece of the ep, a relentless percussive cluster*ck that belies its slow tempo with a fearless rhythmic attitude. its as immersive and narcotic as anything ever produced by stott - peeling away one layer after another with each repeated listen. >we stay together< (part one) was the first track written for the ep and offers a more spacious narrative and a more sparkling, hazy palette - culminating in a beautifully frayed central hook thats somehow in keeping with the vhs aesthetic of both jamal moss and ferris bueller. >cherry eye< tumbles deep into a darkened hole before ep closer >cracked< turns up, fuelled by an odd mixture of adrenalin and sorrow to send you on your way.... buzzing and forlorn

superdisko 06 enters the late summer with a melodic house smasher from viennese underground stars smacs and patrick kong, it is the first vinyl release of smacs and patrick kong on the superdisko label, 2008 they opened the catalogue with their great >sender/ receiver< digital release, now they are back with >innocence< in a dirty mood! superdisko label boss tobias oliver comes with a fat remix of >innocence< in a driving techno style with analogue chords and pads and brings the track into a sunny 90ies feeling....

daniel solar is one half of dikso, the excellent edits imprint responsible for many a disco-rinsed dancefloor burner over the last year. the hannover native is also one of berlins emergent talents, a dj, producer, label owner and a&r intent on bridging the gap between disco and dance music, while coaxing the techno-loving citys tastes a little further off the beaten track.
as a child of the early 80s, daniel was strongly influenced by synth pop and dance music, before rap and hip hop caught his imagination and inspired his first forays into production. once he had finished school, daniel became more and more and intrigued with house and techno, clubs and raves, and his studio style expanded to take in electro, techno, and deep house until we arrive at today and his latest release: too much light ep.

recorded in late 2010 and mixed in a remote studio during the finnish snowstorms of early 2011, donky pitch present >the trick ep<, by helsinki resident and skweee pioneer v.c. six original tracks of synth soaked computer funk, electro inspired slow jams and colourful hip hop heaters. v.c. has been making moves in the skweee scene since the early days (as a solo artist and as 1/4 of supergroup yt). his combination of layered synths, hip hop beats and that type of funk only found in the cold reaches of the nordic region have scored him releases on every skweee label going (flogsta danshall / harmnia / mssy / ddpop / disques mazout) as well as ramp recordings. we felt it only right that he commanded our first true foray into the scandinavian electro funk sound of skweee.

following on from last years dachshund skank ep by klic & article.01, we have asked some of our favourite producers of the moment to add their own slant to the originals which previously found their way into the dj sets of martyn and addison groove and gained support from bbc6 music. greymatter continues with his new love for chicago-styled synth and drum machine work-outs with his jacking take on forwards, while pixelord and the hotly tipped gerry read take the track mustard tiger in two very different directions on the flip. the digital release sees the talented new boy blacksmif and hit and hope regular naive machine add their respective twists to round off the release.

wack records return after a short holiday in scarborough. this time fully equipped with giant disco balls, 70s roller boots and flame throwers in order to get the party started right! dj kid stretch hails from greece (dmc greek champion 2000) and his production skills shine in this superb refix of disco got me mesmerized. french veteran dj prosper turns the heat up with his version of disco reach blending soul and electronica. on the b-side smov busts some rhymes and flips it over a melody of a pure disco classic dropped into a vat of tuff beats that result in busta move. the breakbeat junkies collaboration with dj p from stoke u.k resulted in this powerful ball breaker of a tune that will leave you in a slump exhausted from got what it takes.

>they were from downtown, somewhere in soho and boy did they love that drum machine of theirs...< following the stellar trip down 80s lane with the bicep boys, mystery meat returns with two rip-roaring edits from soho808, another rising duo, but this time from across the pond in nyc. these fine gents have been causing an absolute ruckus over the past few months or so following appearances on soul claps social experiment 002 mix (not to mention doing an awesome podcast for soul claps acclaimed series) as well as jamie jones fabric 59 mix, berlins dikso imprint, and being featured on the wurst music ever compilation due out this fall. big tings a gwan to say the very least! here we see the chaps head into edits territory, well sorta. to call these edits is quite an understatement. soho808 give a serious overhaul to two songs of discos past, adding additional instrumentation and tweaking the arrangement big time. first up to bat is trouble and strife, an amazing, slow-burning take on one of the most famous of songs from the past couple of decades. trust us, you cant resist! flip it over for a loopy counterpart, low-slung, sultry female vox and all. mmmm, well bring our meat to suzys bbq any day!

a debut release for both band and label, parisian duo paradis bring two eloquently produced tracks to beats in space in the form of the >parfait tirage / la ballade de jim< 12 inch (bis001). admirers from afar of dj tim sweeneys weekly on air institution of 12 years (from which the label takes its name), paradis submitted demos hoping they might hack it for some play time. reared on classical and jazz, turned young hip hop rebels, turned teen club crawlers, and then university machine tinkerers, simon meny & pierre rousseau grew out of genre jumping while young enough to stay ahead and settle into music making centered around melody and emotion.

next up in the sofrito super singles series is the highlife underground ep – celebrating the bassline heavy sound of 80s highlife.
on the a-side we have teamed up with new london producer drumtalk for a remix of ghanas mpese mpese band. initially released in 1986 the original track was an extended medley – the remix balances the swing of the original with heavy bass and chopped chords, bringing the track up to date while respecting the vibe of the original – an intense example of futuristic highlife that bridges the gap between hackney and accra.
the flip sees the sofrito crew present a killer groove courtesy of the canadoes dance band, originally released on the rogers all stars label in 1982. a minor key intro drops into bouncing drums, handclaps and a bubbling bassline that build and build into a deep and unrelenting groove…

this cut by dobws co-funder jerome catalepsia bazzanella, is a straight and heavy on the floor slice of futuristic techno, constructed around a cyclic discoid baseline. as distressing sci-fi effects collides and crash into each other, a dehumanized vocoded voice enunciates random numbers. scary.

edit king leo zero returns with something very special to kick off a new run of no frills dancefloor bombs that have been tried and tested over the summer on a packed worldwide dj schedule from stockholm to tokyo and beyond. first up is an intensive slice and dice exercise on probably the best track from definitely the best band in the world: the clash. leo takes their most disco friendly outing >the maginificent dance< famously spun by mr levan at the garage - and with the more dubby rare levan version he homes in on looped 1 bar sections, skating along to create a new arrangement - added to the brew are bootleg recordings form the clashes infamous live show at nycs bonds ballroom, and even some baseline demos digitally siphoned from people practicing guitar along to the clash on youtube!….. we are left with is an epic labour of love edit that has already found its way into the a-listers record boxes - from derrick carter to laurent garnier who are all spinning this solid as a rock dub disco bomb. on the flip we have a classy house re-work of al hudson & partners >music< which sticks a chi-town kick and snare up its rear end along with some serious sub bass, and in the middle things get all wobbly with some trademark leo zero space echo rides and before we are quickly warped back-in and onto the floor… big with a load of top jocks too including severino of horse meat disco fame.

torb is fabien & julien torb. two french guys from the already mytical motorbass recording studio of paris. julien is a new engineer, my faithfull and beloved assistant. fabien is building modular synths and repairing our lovely pultecs and emts in the attic. the day fabien finished the tt1 (torb technologie number one) their love of francesco farfa and their pure techno ethic collided into some magical music. we at cassius records are so proud to put their beautiful sound out. in those days of maximal and minimal war, in those days where real house music seems to attract people again on the floor their techno is a bless and a bliss. reminding me of my rave age, when the all of paris was going to mozinor to dance to francesco farfa, armando, yayo or the ur guys until the break of dawn, i couldnt resist to ask them to grant us with a splendid ep : mars premier. i have nothing really to say more than that, and those who know me will understand that this thing is serious. peace and happiness zdar

after his recent excursion remixing groove armada, morton sorenson returns to the fold with a stunning little release for tirk titled >the burn down ep.< for those that dont know, morten is in his early twenties and hails from a small fishing village in rural norway. his dad probably spent many years in new york and the records that he brought back encouraged a love of american house and disco on the impressionable morton. >burn down (original)’ is an exercise in uplifting, stripped back house music. less is more here, the vibe stays rich and never loosens its grip. the rhythms skip on top of the beat and the vocal interludes make for a real vivid experience. the lpz remix on the other hand sits back a bit, the rhythms are solidly swung and the vocal appears more affluently in the mix. it feels smooth and definitely cool. to top the package, were served up some chi-town flavours with <owe that 2 u.< sustained strings and a slo-mo shuffle builds, then peels away to a hollowed out organ breakdown. a hauntingly affected vocal and clever edits ensue then drop back into the beat, articulated now by the clack of a tough stacatto synth. in our eyes, a brilliant end to a fantastic package
